Known by many as the Godfather of Hip Hop, Russell Simmons was one of the first to launch a line of clothing developed specifically for the urban and hip-hop community.

Forming Phat Farm in 1992, Simmons’ aim was to bring an urban aesthetic to the preppy styles that he personally found so appealing. In the years since its inception, Phat Farm gone from being a small, one-store boutique label headquartered in New York City to a multi-million dollar brand that is constantly on the cutting edge of mainstream fashion. And, of course, Phat Farm’s success in the urban clothing niche helped pave the way for similar brands like Sean John, Rocawear and Zoo York.

In 1998 Simmons’ then wife, Kimora Lee, launched Baby Phat, a women’s line to stand alongside the Phat Farm brand.
